All kinds of prayer

Tag: Prayer For...Sage @ 11:23 am

And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. Ephesians 6:18

Prayer is mentioned in the context of the wardrobe of the Christian warrior but not as a specific weapon of war or a piece of armor. That’s because prayer is the key to consistent victory in our warfare. Therefore, prayer is one of the most important things we can do when fighting the enemy.

David’s battle with Goliath was not won when the stone flew from the sling. It was won in David’s close relationship with the Living God. Our battles are won or lost in the way we walk with God. Prayer is talking with God and letting Him talk with you. Prayer is taking a stand against the spiritual forces of darkness that influence events and circumstances in the world.

Prayer is asserting God’s victory before we walk into battle. But prayer is more than kneeling before God. Prayer is as much an attitude as it is an act. Prayer is keeping your heart open to His leadership. Prayer is the constant communion with God needed to face the challenge of completing Jesus’ mission.

A Bible courier recounts: “We walked up to the customs with our suitcases full of Bibles. We know that at that moment there are as many as a hundred people praying for us. And can you feel it! We felt peace and joy as we push our trolley of suitcases towards the customs desk. I am absolutely certain that we were surrounded by angels. It sounds strange, but I just know.

‘Excuse me, ladies, do you have anything to declare?’ says the custom agent. At that moment, a good friend rushes up to the officer. They greet each other profusely. The customs man no longer sees us. We walk on, and a moment later we are standing with all our suitcases, which have not been opened, waiting for a taxi.

“I feel small and think, ‘Who am I? I only walk past the customs with my suitcases and I don’t even have to answer any questions. That’s all that God asks of me. And it’s He who does the rest—incredibly!’”

RESPONSE: Today I commit myself to being a person of prayer as I put on the whole armor of God.

PRAYER: Pray today with all kinds of prayers for all of God’s people. A great challenge and a great opportunity!

Expect answers to prayers

Hear, O Lord, when I cry with my voice, have mercy also upon me and answer me.

As a good soldier, David knew how to handle his weapons, and found himself much at home with the weapon of “all prayer.”

Note his anxiety to be heard.

Pharisees care not a fig for the Lord’s hearing them, so long as they are heard of men, or cleanse their own pride with their sounding devotion; but with a genuine man, the Lord’s ear is everything.

The voice may be profitable used ‘even at private prayer; for thought it is unnecessary, it is often helpful, and aids in preventing distractions…’

We may expect answers to prayer, and should not be easy without them any more than we should be if we had written a letter to a friend upon important business, and had received no reply. – C.H. Spurgeon.

It is not the length of time we spend in prayer, as it is getting the ear of God in very deed, which tells in our praying. Quality rather than quantity is the essential thing in the prayer life, as in many other things.

Prayer an unfailing resource

I cried to Thee, O Lord; and unto the Lord, I made supplication.

Prayer is the unfailing resource of God’s people. If they are driven to their wits’ end, they may still go to the mercy seat.

When an earthquake makes our mountain tremble, the throne of grace still stands firm, and we may come to it.

Let us never forget to pray, and let us never doubt the success of prayer. The hand that wounds can heal; let us turn to Him who smites us, and He will be entreated of us.

Prayer is better solace than Caius building a city, or Saul’s seeking for music. Mirth and carnal amusements are a sorry prescription for a mind distracted and despairing: prayer will succeed where all else fails. – C.H. Spurgeon.

“What a friend we have in Jesus,
All our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer!
Oh, what peace we often forfeit,
Oh, what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer.”

In every prayer of mine for you

Always in every prayer of mine for you all making request with joy, For your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now.

There are Christian people whose life is so far removed from excitement, agitation and peril, which they seem to have no opportunities for winning great moral victories; their powers are very limited, and they are not appointed tasks of great difficulty and honor.

Let them resolve to have their part in the righteousness of their comrades who face the fiercest dangers, and in the fame of the very chiefs and heroes of the great army of God.

Let them pray for “all the saints,” and their prayers will give courage, endurance, and the invincible fidelity to those who are struggling with incessant temptations……

By constant and earnest intercession for “all the saints,” those who are living in quiet and obscure places may share the honors and victories of all their comrades, may have some part in the praise of their holiness, and some part in their final reward. – R.W. Dale.

Prayer, The Borders of an Invisible World

And having an High Priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart, in full assurance of faith.

In prayer, the soul approaches to the borders of an invisible world, and acts as a spirit holding intercourse with the Father of Spirits.

It drops for a time the remembrance of its earthly connections, to dwell among everlasting objects.

Prayer, by this means, both composes and purifies the heart; it gives the soul its proper elevation toward God, and has a happy effect to counterwork the dangerous impression made by the corruptions of the world around us. – Hugh Blair.

“Let us draw near.” It was a solemn time when on the great day of atonement the High Priest went into the most Holy Place, and stood in the presence of the Shekinah glory. That was the nearest to God any man then came.

But now the veil has been rent and we are all priests unto God, and may draw near to God. “Draw nigh to God and he will draw nigh to you.”

If thou be silent to me…

Unto Thee will I cry, O Lord my rock; be not silent to me, lest, if Thou be silent to me, I become like them that go down into the pit.

Mere formalists may be content without answers to their prayers, but genuine suppliants cannot; they are not satisfied with the results of prayer itself in calming the mind and subduing the will – they must go further and obtain actual replies from heaven, or they cannot rest; and those replies they long to receive at once, if possible; they dread even a little of God’s silence.

God’s voice is often so terrible that it shakes the wilderness; but His silence is equally full of awe to an eager suppliant; when God seems to close His ear, we must not therefore close our mouths, but rather cry with more earnestness; for when our note grows shrill with eagerness and grief, He will not long delay us a hearing. – C.H. Spurgeon.

When we call up the central telephone office and there is no answer, we know there is something wrong somewhere. And when silence follows our praying something must be wrong, not with God but with us.

We miss much because we do not wait…

Abraham stood yet before the Lord.

The story takes but a few moments to read; but the scene may have lasted for the space of hours.

We cannot climb the more elevated pinnacles of prayer in a hasty rush.

They demand patience, toil, prolonged endeavor, ere the lower slopes can be left, and the brooding cloud-line passed, and the aspiring soul can reach that cleft in the mountain-side, where Moses stood beneath the shadow of God’s hand.

Of course, our God is ever on the alert to hear and answer those prayers which, like minute-guns, we fire through the livelong day; but we cannot maintain this posture of ejaculatory prayer unless we cultivate the prolonged occasion.

HOW MUCH WE MISS BECAUSE WE DO NOT WAIT BEFORE GOD…

If only we had remained longer at the palace door, we might have seen the King come out with a benediction in His face and a largess in His hands. – F.B. Meyer.

Suppose we resolve to-day that henceforth we will remain “longer at the palace door,” and so receive the larger blessing which the King has for us.

I pray not for the world but for them…

I pray for them: I pray not for the world but for them which Thou hast given me: for they are Thine.

Just like the Lord each believing intercessor has his own immediate circle for whom he first prays.

Parents have their children; teachers, their pupils; pastors, their flocks; all workers their special charge, all believers those whose care lies upon their hearts.

It is of great consequence that intercession should be personal, pointed, definite, and then our first prayer must always be that they may receive the word.

But this prayer will not avail unless with our Lord we say, “I have given them Thy word”: it is this gives us liberty and power in intercession for souls.

Not only pray for them but speak to them. And when they have received the word let us pray much for their being kept from the evil one for their being sanctified through that word. – Andrew Murray.

It is important that we speak to men about God: but it is vastly more important that we speak to God about men. – C.I. Scofield.

They shall mount up with wings of eagles

But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles.

There are heights in experimental knowledge of the things of God which the eagle’s eye of acumen and philosophic thought hath never seen; and there are secret paths which the lion’s whelp of reason and judgment hath not as yet learned to travel.

God alone can bear us there; but the chariot in which He takes us up, and the fiery steeds with which that chariot is dragged, are prevailing prayers.

….. Prevailing prayers takes the Christian to Carmel, and enables Him to cover heaven with clouds of blessing and earth with floods of mercy.

….. Prevailing prayer bears the Christian aloft to Pisgah and shows him the inheritance reserved; ay, and it elevates him to Tabor and transfigures him, till in the likeness of his Lord, as He is, so are we also in this world. – C.H. Spurgeon.

Our prayer life should be a ladder not simply for the ascending and descending of angels of blessing, but for the constant ascending of our own souls into the heights of God.

In the morning shall my prayer come before Thee

Psalm 88:13 [show/hide]ERROR: You have exceeded your quota of 5000 requests per day. Please contact the developer of this application if you have questions. (If you're the developer and have questions about this error message, please contact Crossway.)

But unto Thee, O Lord, have I cried. And in the morning shall my prayer come before Thee.

Very earnestly would I advise the dedication to secret prayer of a strictly regular time; a punctual beginning, and especially in the morning, a measure and liberal allotment.

I certainly do not mean a mere mechanical regularity, as if we watched the clock for the moment when to close.

But I do mean a time at least as punctual and at least as free from hurry as that which we habitually give to our meals; and this, I repeat, especially in the morning.

If I plead less earnestly for a large allowance of time at night I do it with hesitation and reserve, and only because a conscientious Christian, who is doing the will of God through the day, is likely to be physically tired at night in a way in which he will not be, certainly in his youth in the morning. – H.C.G. Moule.

One of the greatest hindrances to prayer is the hurry of life, the pressure and rush of business.

In the interests of our soul we must guard ourselves at this point, and take time to pray.
